> slow day.
> It's been a slow day. One of the slowest in memory, really- you've been tending this shop for quite a while now, and you've only gotten about ten customers. It's eerily silent, despite being mid-afternoon. Through the transparent slide doors, you can see a bunch of teenagers who just got out of class blocking off the entrance way. Rude.
> As one kid backs his ass against the door, you fight the urge to head out of the shop for a second just to yell at him. Yet, your exhaustion gets the better of you. It just ain't worth it. The handheld radio on the counter continued to drone on, as it did throughout the day- it's the only thing that had eased the tense quiet. "Expect a sunny day today in the Inaba and Okina districts." says a voice, droning through the radio static. "It's a wonderful day to visit the local parks with friends or family. By tonight the sky will cloud over, but for now, enjoy the good weather! Now, then, that's it for weather. Back to our usual talk show with hit author Okita Narue... Okita's latest romance captures the struggles of a young woman in love with a former teacher... the novel sold over fifty-thousand copies nationwide upon its first week of release, and that doesn't even count digital downloads of the groundbreaking work..." > As you listen half-interestedly to the boring interview, the door is suddenly pulled open as a thirty-something year old man walks inside. He looks even more tired than you."... One cup of vanilla coffee, please? One spoon of sugar, no milk?" he asked, punctuating the sentence with a heavy smoker's cough. > That's an order for a rough day. Thank God he didn't order any milk- you're almost out.

- - - - - ROLLING SNARE DRUMS ECHO - - - - - Damn kids. A moment before she realised she was thinking like someone thrice her age, staring at the rabble outside her door. But still, they were annoying. Hanging outside her door and intimidating other customers, without even buying anything themselves. But as much as she disliked the loiterers, Calhoun couldn't really do anything about them.
The radio continued to yammer on, talk of weather and boring small-town news forming the background noise of her otherwise silent cafe. Sure, people had come in earlier, but none of them had been very talkative. The most boring customers were the quiet ones. After all, what would she do other than talk idly to her patrons? Wash all of her mugs, again, for the fifth time today?
She sighed a quiet sigh, looking under her counter for her cloth and preparing for the fifth deep clean when the door swung open. Back up, quickly but gently, a practiced smile on her face. Before she can give her usual welcome, the drained-looking man makes his simple request.
"Absolutely, it'll just be a minute." She says, turning away from him to begin preparations. With a few deft movements the coffee was brewing, and the sugar was already ready and waiting to be added. For the moment however, she could talk.
"So, what brings you here today?" She asked, turning to face her patron with a quiet smile. "I don't think I've seen you around before. I thought I knew every coffee lover in this town already, Mr...?" Leafie - - - - - THE RAIN SOUNDS LIKE APPLAUSE - - - - -

> He looks a little winded. > The man looks over to you, but his eyes never quite meet your brow. He's a broad-nosed fellow wearing business clothing and carrying a briefcase. Maybe an accountant of some sort?"You're pretty observant- I just picked up a job in the law firm nearby..." he said, laying out a small wad of money on the table to be collected. "I'm on my way home, but I need the damn caffeine fix." "It's a small place, this town. The mayor's a pretty good guy, or so I've heard." he said, his voice almost sighing off towards the end. "How about you? You like this sort of thing?" he asked, his eyes dodging from the counter to Calhoun's torso before finally meeting her face. > You can't tell if he's talking about the town, your job, or whatever else.
"It's not often that people your age make much conversation. I'm somewhat surprised you took the initiative, to tell you the truth." He looked to the radio, similarly lost in the drone over some woman's new romance novel. He didn't admit it, but he had the previous edition locked tight in his case.

- - - - - ROLLING SNARE DRUMS ECHO - - - - - A lawyer, eh? Or at least, someone who works for a lawyer. Quick, tiring work. No wonder he needed a fix.
"Well, you're in luck. Caffeine's exactly what I provide." With a chuckle, she turned back to her work. As her hands danced between coffee machine, mug, spoon, and sugar, she listened. And as she turned to place his finished coffee on the counter and collect her payment, steam still wafting upwards from the boiling mixture, she could swear she saw his eyes resting on her chest. Typical.
"If you mean coffee, it's sort of a love of mine. Why I opened the store in the first place, after all." A smile grew on her face as she leaned back from the counter to a resting position, watching her patron with wistful eyes. She'd never really enjoyed coffee. But it was long past the point she could go without it. "The people here are nice, easy to talk to. Nobody minds starting a conversation over a warm mug. And the town... it's quiet. Peaceful, too. I've felt a lot safer here than I have in a long time. Though I guess..."
She stared out the windows of her cafe, recalling the recent news stories. "There's been those disappearances recently, though. Makes me kinda nervous... guess I'll have to cut down on the late-night supply runs." Leafie - - - - - THE RAIN SOUNDS LIKE APPLAUSE - - - - -

> Sternness, but not distrust.
> He immediately averts his gaze from your chest, but there's no fooling you. He's still not smiling, his face is locked into a neutral expression... but you get a hint of trust. He's let down his guard."Oh, I understand. Yeah, I'm the same way- I'm nothing without this stuff keeping me going. Being an attorney is about 50% paperwork and contracts, and the other parts are mostly computer-related." he said, before muttering a comparison of the job to accounting. > The comment about the town arrives."I... I got that sort of a feeling, yes." he agrees, nodding as you list off adjectives. \ > He then raises his eyebrow as you move on to the disappearances.""Ah? I think I've heard about it. Higher-ups of mine are currently dealing with a tort regarding negligence, and it had to do with that. One of the girls who hasn't been found was apparently ill and supposed to be with a caretaker at the time she was reported missing. She was at the local municipal hospital, I believe..." he explained. "She had... panic disorder, I think? She was going through a rough period in her life or something." he explained. "Your nervousness isn't without its foundations. I'd stay off the streets at night no matter what if I lived in this town." he said, muttering the last part. > He pauses to accept his coffee, and you feel as if it's your turn to speak again.> What else do you know about that girl? > Do you know more about the other disappeared women? > What else do you know about Inaba?WITHOUT YOU, I'M STRUGGLING, MY LOVE

- - - - - ROLLING SNARE DRUMS ECHO - - - - - "Man... that's rough." A girl disappeared from the hospital? Calhoun had only heard about the disappearances, not anything specific. But a girl, in hospital, disappearing without a trace? That was practically impossible.
> What else do you know about that girl? > Do you know more about the other disappeared women?
"How's it possible to disappear in a hospital?" She asked, confusion plain on her face. "I mean, there must be security cameras, right? Somebody must have seen whoever took her?"
A hand raised to her chin, puzzling over the scenario. It just... didn't make sense as far as she was concerned. And if a hospital wasn't safe...
"What about the other girls? I only heard they were gone, but I assumed they were being picked off the streets..." A small flash of worry on her face. "Do you know where they went missing? Like, if you can go missing in a hospital, with a caretaker, who knows where else you can be gotten..." Leafie - - - - - THE RAIN SOUNDS LIKE APPLAUSE - - - - -
