> Clicky clicky > Dorm 11, 10:25 PM..."If these formulas work out correctly, then there's little chance that there will be any danger to our new comrade. He should be able to sleep through the Dark Hour without feeling a thing." a voice mused. A young man clad all in white was leaned forward in a swivel chair, clicking his pen in time to his heartbeat. His desk was absolutely covered in various papers, each of their lines containing scribbles and mathematical formulas that often referenced the time of '12:00'. He looked somewhat distraught- not quite fearful, but his brow was furrowed and he held his pen tight enough to break it in two. "..." Any minute now. He decided to head back down to the first floor- the lower floors were probably already asleep, and the new transfer could arrive at any given moment. A proper greeting was probably a good idea- after all, the poor student was probably kind of rattled after being given that sudden explanation. Fukurou, I pray that you did what I asked of you...His words were nothing but a muffled grumbling to himself, before seating himself on a leather sofa, moving a throw pillow to the side. He had taken down a clipboard, continuing his work once more as he waited for the time. Now, how to get a teenager asleep by twelve? He could think of approximately five different methods, only two of them legal. None would be the wiser if it worked, though. The least he could do was spare this ill-fated young man of experiencing the brunt of the Dark Hour- if he panicked and ran from the Dorm without an Evoker, he would not make it especially far before being mauled by Shadows. > Enter stage right.

Shiki checked his phone as he walked, quirking his mouth as he noted the time. It was pretty late to be just baring into the dorm. If they locked the door at night or something he was probably boned. He supposed he could just try and catch a train back home for the night if that happened. It would be embarrassing, but it was doable. The rattle of his rolling luggage behind was a reminder of how all-or-nothing the trip was.
Before he knew it, he was right outside the building.
He couldn't help but gawk a little. Shiki wasn't sure what he had expected, but the facilities looked pretty nice (from the outside, anyway) for high school. His visual novel comparison before was spot on. It made him wonder all the more just what he was getting into. Mankai Academy. Shiki took a moment to exhale, then approached, hefting his suitcase up and handling the door with his free hand.
It opened easily, with a slight creak that signaled use but not disrepair. Sticking his head in like the vanguard for the rest of him, Shiki glanced around. It looked even better on the inside, if that was at all possible. Stepping over the threshold, he set his luggage to the side and began to close the door behind him when his eyes caught something. Someone, rather. A person, on the couch not far from the door. He blinked. This guy was.....sure white, wasn't he?
Shiki stood frozen a moment, then managed a smile. "Sup?" Realizing the door was still ajar, he hastily turned to close it, using a little too much force in his haste and generating a somewhat startling bang. He stared at the door dubiously, wondering just how unnecessarily loud that had been, before turning back to the other boy again. What was he doing out there alone? Wouldn't his room be better for that?

> it's... nice. But why do things feel so strange? > You see the studious guy and try to greet him, but he doesn't turn towards you. He turns halfway, and his eyes flash briefly- he's about to greet you, when...CLANG! The door shuts awfully loudly, and the third-year flinches just a little, before gently laying the clipboard on a side-table. "... Kakuma, I presume? It's good to see you here." he greeted, straightening his glasses. "The secretary notified me that you'd be coming here soon, so I decided to wait. Our own dorm head has been out for a spell to help a friend..." > As he speaks, you have to take a moment to take in your surroundings. This foyer is seriously huge- with sofas, a marble floor and even a novel-looking television attached to the wall, it's more like a hotel than any school-related facility. It's... nice... but you can't help but feel it's a little out of place. He stood up, allowing Shiki to see him. He was quite tall, standing up perfectly straight. "I thought it'd be best if I showed you to your room. You're on the second floor, with the other male students... Room 23." he said. He begins in the opposite direction, over to a lift elevator. "This way, please." > You hear stirring. You're far from the only one living here, and the dining area in particular seems to be full of life.

Well, this upperclassman (he assumed?) took his ungraceful entry in stride, so that was kind of a relief. Talk about a first impression though. Shiki took a moment to exhale through his nose, trying to loosen up. He really wasn't built to be as tense as he was. Ahhh, it was all this Newspaper Club stuff! He just needed. To. Relax.
Still, he blinked when the other boy greeted him. The secretary? That could only be... "Fukurou-senpai did?" He was proving more assiduous every second. Books and covers and blah blah. He was absolutely relieved though. Being greeted at the door was a lot better than just tumbling in and hoping for the best. His smile was less forced. "I appreciate you waiting around, then. Guess I'm in your care!"
This guy was interesting though. He had sort of a bookish look to him, but in that moment when he stood, he seemed almost unfittingly dignified. Shiki didn't dwell on it long, or even fully process it, but it definitely caught his attention. When he said he'd show him the way, Shiki stammered out an "uhh, yeah, sure thing," before following after, suitcase wheels creaking.
Taking an elevator for one floor wasn't really his style, but it was a hell of a lot more preferable than dragging his crap up the stairs. As he caught up, he could hear the sounds he missed earlier. Looked like there was never a chance of him arriving on his own anyway. Good knowledge. He wasn't much of an early sleeper anyway.

> You must be exhausted. "Ah, yes. Fukurou is a friend and associate of mine, and he's well-known for keeping track of statistics, numbers and other such records. He'll probably be an accountant or businessperson when he graduates college... if he ever gets in the right mindset. He's rather lazy, and doesn't pay attention to deadlines until the last second. A mindset like that won't sit well with professors." he chided. > You feel a faint friendship between the two that Fukurou hadn't originally let on.As Shiki stammered before stepping into the elevator, he gave a reassuring smile. "... You're shaking, Kakuma. It'll be all right, no need to fret." he said, before suddenly glancing upwards. "Oh, right. I'm Towa Akira, a senior here at Mankai. Sorry about the lack of an introduction." The elevator stopped and the door unsheathed, opening up to a carpeted hall with electric lamps lighting the walkway symmetrically. "Your room is all the way at the end of the hall, on the right. Feel free to make yourself at home- but please, stay orderly. Set your alarm clock for the correct time in the morning, and if you haven't eaten, there's food in the refrigerator downstairs." he informed. "Oh, and... before you go. I hate to make us sound uptight, but we have a strict curfew of 11:30 PM. It's not enforced very strictly, but it's a preference of ours to ensure that your sleep schedule is not thrown off." he mentioned offhand. "Now, then. You'll want to be off- you have a large day ahead of you yet. Have a good night." > It's time to go... what are your plans?
> Follow the proposed rule. > Pretend to follow the rule, but stay up browsing the internet. > Break the rule and investigate downstairs.

Huh. Shiki supposed it wasn't unusual for someone to have friends. Presumably people who used the dorms would be familiar with him anyway, right? He accepted that answer at face value. Really he was more intrigued by Takumi's apparent rep. Just how far did that guy's depths go? The part about his mindset felt a bit more right though. At least Shiki wasn't a completely useless judge of character.
The elevator doors shut, and the senior spoke up again. Shiki was sure he looked as startled as he felt. Damn, he had really hoped he was playing off his tension better than that. "T-that obvious, huh...?" The smile he managed was a tad too crooked. And then the greeting. A name to a face was always appreciated. "I guess you already know, but I'm Kakuma Shiki. Nice to-"
Hold it. Towa. He had absolutely heard that name, and not long ago. He couldn't be that Towa, right? Except, what were the odds that a second Towa was in their dorm? Was this seriously the head of the Newspaper Club himself? "....meet you." His nerves had calmed. It wasn't that he was at ease. More like, this was exactly the focus he needed to overpower his anxiety. He honestly couldn't fully place his emotions at that moment.
The door opened, and Shiki stepped out. He was grateful for the directions. The curfew took him a little by surprise, but not terribly. It was a school establishment, so it would be a little weird if there weren't rules like that, he figured. Plus, he figured he could get to sleep before midnight on most school days anyway, so what was the problem? "Got it. Thanks for everything!"
Except, it wasn't quite that easy.
>Stay up browsing the internet
It didn't take long to get himself situated. The umaibo he'd packed with him defeated the need for a snack run, so once he was in he had no need to leave for the night. Plans to get any kind of early sleep for the first day went south though. Sitting in bed, he could only think of Akira and the strange situation he had found himself in. It also took him about that long to realize Takumi's description of him had implied more distance than actually existed. Had he tried to hide it? Why? There was basically no way he could sleep when he had absolutely everything on his mind.
And so he clicked away in the dark, face illuminated by his monitor. In only a plain white tee and boxers, he lay sprawled across his bed, laptop at one end and feet on his pillow. Nobody was on, so he didn't especially have much aim at the moment. Just a listless crawl between three tabs until his thoughts could settle the hell down.

Towa stopped for a moment, giving a mature half-smile. "I'm sure you can handle yourself." he said, before the elevator closed behind him. He didn't think to come back and check on his new classmate. Never put your trust in someone below the age of twenty to follow any rules regarding a set bedtime, ever. > The wall-mounted clock reads 11:58 PM. It's getting late. You've been browsing and refreshing for a few hours, now, but there doesn't seem to be much new content from any of your acquaintances. It's probably weekday rush for that group- with school already having started in most districts, it's a shock that anything's being posted at all.
> 11:59 PM. Outside, the skyline is pretty. Golden lights shine out of the blackened streets, apartment complexes and office high-rises giving off a warm glow that reminds you of hundreds of candles lit at once. It's nice... but you're not sure how you'll adapt to it. Looking back at the screen, you scroll through a few more pages of discussion forum updates and pointless memes until...
> 12:00 PM.
> Suddenly, the lights flicker and your screen goes black. Looking outside, it looks like every window has been zapped, too. Holy smokes, a city-wide power surge on the first day? You're confused and maybe a little forlorn over possible damage to your device, but mostly angry that the world would do this to you on your first night in this place. Strike you down with lightning next, why don't they? Regardless, it's not too unusual for you.
> What now?
> Head downstairs and make sure that everyone is okay. But put on some pants first. > Stay in and wait for the power to come back. This is seriously not fine. You remain pantsless until further notice. > Try your cell and see if any radio towers are still up. Let's see how far this really went. The local electric company had better get on this. [/quote]

Well, it seemed he could add his computer going dead to the rapidly increasing number of things he didn't expect that night. No warning, no error message. One second he was lurching through his usual locales, and the next his screen was stone dead. Shiki's listless eyes popped open when his room was plunged into darkness. The heck was this? He pressed the power once, twice, then gave the whole thing a light slap, as if he could jolt it awake. What happened? It was hardly brand new, but he took better care of his stuff than this.
Annoyed, he shifted to get a look at his clock, mostly out of curiosity. His surprise grew when he realized he couldn't see it. Was it dead too? That couldn't be right. His phone was on the desk somewhere, but he didn't feel like blindly shuffling for it. With his curiosity growing a little faster than his perturbation, he kicked off his bed and plodded to the window, his bare feet producing a gentle tap on the wood floor. Two fingers peeled back a curtain, exposing only more darkness. The streets had been well lit when he arrived earlier, and should've continued to be until morning, he figured. There wasn't a single light to be seen. Shiki stepped away, running a hand through his tangled hair in disbelief. "Seriously..?"
Well, it was annoying, but there wasn't a whole lot he could do about it. Disappointed, he felt his way back to the bed, managing to close the laptop and set it aside with his developing night vision. He guessed he wasn't getting anything done anyway, but he couldn't help feeling intruded upon.
>Wait for the power to turn back on. Screw pants.
He flopped back on the bed, resting his head on the pillow but declining to crawl under the sheets just yet. With his mood he wasn't sure if he would be getting to sleep soon anyway. So much for his distraction.
