OVERALL- When most people look at Shiki, they can't help but wonder if he's healthy. Between his pale complexion, paler hair, and borderline gaunt frame, he could easily be mistaken for the walking dead. His hair has grown to a tremendously shaggy length, and he rarely bothers to style it in any way, giving rise to an impenetrable and chaotic snarl. His eyes are green, but with almost a hint of brown to them, preventing them from being truly vivid.

UNIFORM STYLE- Shiki wears his blazer open. He does away with the tie and doesn't bother to fully button up his dress shirt, exposing the collar of a black undershirt.

CASUAL STYLE: Like most other aspects of him, Shiki's wardrobe is sloppy and perhaps a little plain. Tees and jeans all the way. In the colder winter months he has a few jackets and hoodies that he cycles through, their only commonality being how worn and ratty they look. If it's cold enough he might wear a scarf, striped blue and gray.

His style in the summer is much the same, sans the jackets of course. He's also more willing to go for shorts. More specifically, he likes to wear a puka shell necklace he received as a gift from an online friend.

NATURE: Affable

OVERALL: Shiki mostly seems to float through life. He's never felt particularly motivated to do much of anything, and so he takes everything at his own pace. Often he comes off as a flake, since he will never verbally commit to anything he knows he won't follow through on; a list which stretches quite long, truly. In spite of all this, he doesn't actually come across as listless or spacey on first introduction, as one might expect. If anything he seems fairly enthusiastic, all smiles and laughs. But combined with his occasional lapses of common sense and utterly atrocious study habits, this just results in the impression of an airhead rather than a true go-getter.

For all of his failings, he's a pretty nice guy. Chatty and sociable, Shiki proves easy to get along with under most circumstances. He proves reasonably perceptive in regards to others, which gives him a sort of social reliability to make up for his otherwise unreliable nature. Perhaps it comes as no surprise that he spends much of his time on the internet, where these sorts of skills can get him farther than they do in life. This can produce surprising results, as the boy who consistently bombs history tests will prove unusually keyed in to current events and such. Mostly he just plays games and screws off though, so it's a bit of a crapshoot.

Food is a considerable interest. Anyone who spends any time with Shiki will quickly discover that he loves to eat. He will order as much as two or even three meals if his wallet can take the hit, and he packs it all away without ever slowing down. One wonders why he vaguely resembles a skeleton with such eating habits, but even he isn't entirely sure. Beyond basic food quality Shiki isn't a very picky eater, but he has something of a gourmet's taste. New restaurants with exciting ingredients are the subject of great anticipation, and he can detect and savor even the most benign of flavors. For all of his obsession, he is absolutely hopeless in the kitchen.

As mentioned earlier, Shiki is fairly perceptive of social atmosphere. As such, he knows full well how people perceive him. A slob, an idiot, a slackass. He's also ok with it. Back where he came from, his peers ostracized him for something he realistically could not control. But in Okina, he doesn't have that problem. He's not looked down on for being "untouchable", but instead colored by the qualities that are actually a part of him. And it makes him glad. He's not saying he wouldn't mind a better rep, but all things considered, he's received an objective improvement in social standing. And that's fine by him.

TRAITS:

+ cheerful: not unreasonably so, but rare are the times when shiki doesn't look like he's having a good time.
+ amiable: shiki likes to talk, and he's more than willing to approach others and initiate. it is perhaps his greatest advantage when it comes to first impressions.
+ accepting: as one who grew up ostracized for factors of his birth, there really aren't a lot of things shiki is willing to judge others for.
+ thoughtful: shiki is consistently considerate of the needs of others. if he bothers to go through with something, it's usually with someone else in mind.
+ encouraging: not much of a doer himself, he strives to at least cheer others on in their own endeavors.

- pushover: anyone with the force of will can easily bowl shiki over. he's simply not willing to preserver for many causes.
- unsure: years of being a pariah has shot his confidence to pieces. he's better at hiding it, but he can't change the results.
- uncommitted: categorically evasive of most responsibilities. he declines most offers beyond basic socialization.
- disorganized: in the extreme. any space belonging to shiki is guaranteed to be a mess. and that's saying nothing of his time management skills.
- book dumb: he's never been the hottest shot in class. or middle of the pack, even. unfortunately, he lacks the classic compensation of being good at p.e.

BIO: Shiki hails from the Dowa people: families branded as "untouchable" generations ago. Before his birth, his father married his mother (herself a Dowa) against the wishes of his family, effectively estranging them. They kept the full extent of their resulting troubles from him, and so even he doesn't fully know just how much they've been through. He would occasionally become aware when they couldn't get loans, and when his mom struggled to find work. Maybe they wanted to shelter him. It didn't work.

To this day, Shiki has no idea how word got out. But somehow, in the middle of elementary school, it became known to his class that he was Dowa. It was unlikely that his classmates fully understood what this meant, but kids rarely need a reason to be cruel. His shoes often found their way into strange places. Rumors circulated that he had family in the yakuza, or even in prison. The only interactions he had with his classmates were purely negative. A few times he even cried in class, which only encouraged his attackers. He felt alone.

He thought things might change in middle school, but this was not to be the case. Many of his old classmates ended up in the same school as him (another point of attack, as they often feigned lament that their school would admit Burakumin) and one way or another he lost his chance to reinvent himself. He stopped bothering to try joining clubs after his first year, as even the more member-starved ones seemed hesitant to associate with him. He stopped offering things, and volunteering for things. What was the point? He was going to be turned down.

It was around this time that he escaped to the internet. In chat rooms, and forums, and online lobbies, he wasn't some outcast. He was whatever he wanted to be. He made connections. Mostly with people across the country, but he also met a few foreigners looking to practice their Japanese in conversation. His most notable friends are from Russia, Italy, and the US. The latter even mailed him a necklace of puka shells for his fourteenth birthday, which he kept to this day.

He was completely unsurprised when nothing changed in high school. It felt like there was always that one person who knew, and it was their mission to spread the word that he was terrible. At this point Shiki couldn't even be sure that it was out of spite. For all he knew, they absolutely believed every word of it. Just as solitude was becoming a fact of life over the years, maybe the original rumors had grown so twisted that they took on their own form of truth. How did one curb talk that was given in earnest sincerity?

And then a miracle happened.

Shiki's father had worked in information technology since as long as he could remember. And at long last it seemed he was being recognized. He was given a promotion, but with it came a transfer. Shiki had never heard of Okina, and frankly that was fine by him. His parents seemed surprised that he had no misgivings, perhaps on account of how much he had withheld from them. That was fine. They never had to know now. He was finally free to live as he desired, and nothing could take that from him.

PERSONA APPEARANCE: A humanoid being composed of some unidentifiable, indigo alloy. Its body shines with immaculate polish, no matter how much abuse it's gone through. It's ankles taper off into points, doing away with the feet entirely, and its gaunt hands hands consist of seven spindly digits each, which tend to twitch erratically at times. From each shoulder extends something resembling a spoiler, each branching out to the side as a trio of pipes, giving the impression of wireframe angel's wings. The smooth head lacks a mouth entirely, with one gleaming orange eye and a massive hole opening on the right. Within this gap floats a single mote of gentle blue light, about where the other eye would be located on a complete face. This beacon tends to glow with greater intensity when magic is used.
