> MEanwhile... > Welcome to Okina City. Land of the gifted, about a mile and a half north of Inaba. It's... far more hectic, to say the least. "... Another registry form? How many new kids is this place gonna accept?" A young man with dyed hair, perhaps seventeen or eighteen, is reclining backwards in a chair. His work desk, lit by the bluish-white glow of a clipped-on lamp, is covered in a messy pile of various papers. Most of them have blanks to be filled in- likely signatures. Rolling his eyes in irritation, the young man flips open the pile, finger sliding across the edges as if he's shuffling a deck of playing cards. "Twenty-eight. Twenty-eight of them, I counted. They admitted twenty-eight new students into Dorm 11. How are all these first-year tykes supposed to fit? It's seriously the smallest dorm we have..." It was sometimes hard for people to believe that this ill-tempered young man was the head of the dorm system. A secretary, you could say. While he didn't look the part, it was hard to deny that his organizational skills were on-point. This is Takumi Fukurou. > brrriiing..."Eh? Some other new people ready to get this dumb application process over with? School starts tomorrow, and it's late- this'd better be quick." BANG BANG BANG

This was a little new to Shiki.
Even before the move, he had looked into Mankai Academy a little. It was honestly a pretty intimidating school. Under plainer circumstances, he wasn't sure they would have accepted him. Combined with what looked like a pretty satisfactory sports record, it was clear that this was an institute with a least a little prestige. Intellectually, he already knew. But the idea of registering for a dorm was what really cemented that reality. Shiki couldn't even imagine a high school with dorms. It was like something out of a visual novel. Their existence was probably only slightly more shocking than when his parents consented to him living in one.
It was honestly a little late to be doing this. The definition of last-minute, really. Everything about this process was one big rush job. One reason to be grateful to the faculty, really. When he heard it wasn't too late to register, in spite of basically all concievable odds, he took the first train down town. And that was what brought him into that room, with possibly the most unlikely face behind the desk.
Shiki couldn't help his surprise at first. His youth, his hair. Was he a delinquent? He caught himself just short of gaping though, and he put on a smile that betrayed the slightest tinge of shakey nerves."Uhh...hey there." Did he....sit? How did this all work?

> SIGN IN YOU DINGBAT. "Whuh?" The slurred response coupled with a few stray sheets of names and information flying off the work desk was probably all Shiki really needed to know. "... Oh. Just another kid who needs to sign in. C'mon, siddown and sign in, will you?" Takumi replied casually. He took a black clipboard with a piece of notebook paper attached from underneath the pile of papers. One of those chain-attached pens was hanging off the side, the clicker part chewed off. "Here, you're gonna need to give your full name, your grade, your class, your cell number and your e-mail. If you don't have a phone or a computer, just leave that last part blank, okay?" > You suddenly question the prestige of this school. What is a guy like this doing in charge of dorm registry?
"... So, seeing from the names of previous applicants and process of elimination combined with that photo you sent us, you're that Kakuma kid, right? The guy who got sent here because of his dad? Them's the breaks, dude." he muttered, before going back to his own paperwork. He had a red "APPROVED" stamp in his right hand, and the other seemed to be going over official-looking documents signed by somebody. "You're the one the Newspaper Club wanted. I don't really get that bunch, but they said that they 'had to have you' or some other nonsense. Dorm 11's pretty cool and all, but the News guys are rough. Good luck." he said. "Oh, uh, and use whatever e-mail and number you'll actually answer. Don't link us to your spam accounts. That's what I did." he whispered the last bit. > Ask the delinquent about the News Club. > Ask the delinquent about himself. > Keep your mouth shut and see if he has more to say.

"Oh, y-yeah!"
He halfway expected the guy to prove that one shouldn't judge a book by its cover. That appearances were but skin deep, and no proper judge of character. Shiki was sure he looked vaguely defeated when these adages proved inapplicable, but he did as instructed and pulled up a seat.
Taking the clipboard and somewhat weathered pen when they came his way, the words became background noise from there. Surprises aside, the process was proving pretty painless. In hindsight he wasn't sure what he even expected before. A quiz? Hand-to-hand combat for the right to room? Shiki couldn't believe he got so worked up over nothing.
Name, Kakuma (ka like angle, uma like horse) Shiki ("four seasons"). Grade, second year. Class-
He glanced up as he was spoken to again. Shiki gave a helpless smile in response to the questions. "Yeah, tell me about it. It's kind of a lot, but what can you do, right?" He actually didn't mind that much, all things considered. But it was conversation, right? Maybe he should mind a little though. He was trying not to think about it, but there was a reasonable chance he was gonna get murdered come class time.
The next bit took him by surprise though.
>Ask about the Newspaper Club
Shiki's congenial expression made way for something more befitting his bafflement. Newspaper Club? Did he say they wanted him? How could that be? Forget being scouted, Shiki didn't even know anyone locally yet. Wasn't everything about this completely weird? He spared a polite chuckle for the bit about his email, before bemusedly turning the conversation back.
"So wait, what was that about the Newspaper Club?" He fiddled with his pen now, so that either end drummed on the clipboard. "Are they like a school paper or something? What do they want with me?" And more to the point, why did he make them sound like a fringe clique or something?

> i thought you'd ask that. The delinquent guy took the clipboard back from Shiki, giving it a four-second once-over before shoving it messily into the pile with the other various knick-knacks and papers. "Cool, thanks. I'm Fukurou Takumi, by the way, a third-year over in Dorm 3- I'm basically the secretary of this place. They pay me. It's not like any sane adult would stay in this stuffy building past midnight." he said, before hearing the inquiry about the Newspaper Club. "Oh, those guys? Yeah, they run the school tribune. It seems like honest work on the surface, just typing up and editing some innocent online news section for the school's website, but it's way more than that once you do a little research. The stuff they publish is normal enough, but they seem like they're after more info than just sports game results and teacher interviews. Call me crazy if you want, but they interview other students about really personal stuff, I hear. They have this head guy, Towa- he's probably the dude who invited you. He's a bit of a freak, but way smarter than I'll ever be." he explained. "Towa's pretty cool, won all these scholarships for chemistry projects and stuff. He's totally going to Tokyo University when he graduates, there's not a doubt in my head. But he... he scouts. He's the son of some higher-up in the Kirijo Co., and he has access to a lot of funky info, including student profiles. He sees everyone who comes in and out of the school... and for some reason, I guess he has his heart set on you as the next member." Takumi sat back in his chair again, crossing his arms behind his neck in a casual fashion. "But, yeah, I'd accept this if I were you. That guy has connections. The inside of Dorm 11 is insane, and he and his little sibling have it decked out in all this high-tech stuff. It's a one-way ticket into a new life... at least, that's what people say. Once you get to class, I think people are gonna notice you. Dorm 11 is normally completely barred to new people. Go enjoy yourself, kid." > What now?

Fukurou-senpai, was it? The way this was going, he'd halfway expected to be in and out before they got around to introductions. Well, Shiki hadn't introduced himself at all, but he had the short end of one-way knowledge and that was close enough really. "Huh, that's cool. How'd you get a setup like that?" he asked in response to Takumi being 'basically the secretary'. It was small talk, but if they really had job openings for students it might be good knowledge down the road.
He found himself leaning in a bit as Takumi went on about the Newspaper Club. Somehow it really only added to the mystery. Of course, given the ominous start to the tale, that was probably to be expected. And this Towa guy as well. Snooping on incoming students seemed well beyond shady. But other than that, it.....sounded a little intriguing? And it seemed like his intended dorm was their playground; a connection he should have made a minute earlier, but eh.
Shiki lowered his gaze in contemplation. He hadn't even decided if he would join any clubs yet, so having one thrust upon him felt intrusive, naturally. But it wasn't like he was being forced into anything, right? At the end of the day, it was still his right to refuse. He was intrigued by what they had to offer, though. And he would be lying if he said he wasn't a little pleased with this role reversal. He was used to people telling him no. Refusing him. So for someone to want him, without prompting, was.....
He looked up, a guarded smile crossing his face. "I guess I'll have to consider it, then." As if there was a more logical option.
A sort of stillness fell over him. Was that....it?
"Soooo, Fukurou-senpai. What happens now?"

> You've got wings, kid. Fly.
"The setup? Oh, I needed money. My parents ain't been in working condition for years, and it can be tough to live off the money that other sources give me. I do odd jobs. Being a secretary just happens to be one of the lucrative ones, because so few people are willing to do something like this. At least I'm pretty awesome with numbers and records and such." > Takumi takes the clipboard, stamping the 'APPROVED' notice next to you name. Looks like there's at least a moderate chance of your important registry forms not getting lost. He absentmindedly stands up, picking up the fallen papers and rearranging them alphabetically. That was when Shiki asked the last question. "'What now?' Isn't it obvious?" asked Takumi, shaking his head slightly. "You head to your dorm, make some friends, go to some special honors classes or somethin' and maybe join a club with a secret handshake or whatever. You've got this whole entire year ahead of you- don't get stressed." advised Takumi. "And, kid- if you ever need anything, just come back here. I'm on the side of anyone who has things rough." He then muttered: "Letter to the Ephesians, AD 400... 'Equi donati dentes non inspiciuntur."

Huh. Despite how he came across, Takumi was a pretty hard worker, huh? That'd teach Shiki to judge. Either way, he'd never had a job in his life, so it was beyond him to say much of anything. It wasn't like he was complaining. The fate of his future living conditions were in his hands, after all!
Ah, the obvious answer. Ask a stupid question, he supposed...
"Ah, yeah. I guess I just....yeah, alright." He laughed a little to cover up his embarrassment. Had he expected more? All in all this whole trip had been a pretty straight shot, minus one odd curveball somewhere in the middle. Still, he appreciated Takumi's unexpected words of encouragement. Maybe because he got so few of them.
He stood, pushing back his chair and letting out a breath he felt he'd held since entering. "I guess I'll be going, then. Thanks for everything, senpai." Shiki gave a little wave before turning to leave. "Seeya around!"

> FLY FLY AWAY "Bye, kid. Good luck with everything." said Takumi, giving a lethargic hand wave as to say farewell. He gave a crooked grin, genuinely glad that Shiki seemed to have everything under control. Control was something he'd need in the coming days. Weeks. Months. > Exit stage left.Riiiiiing! Riiiiiiiiiiiing!A vintage telephone began to ring loudly, leading Takumi to pick up the other end. "... Yeah?" A pause. "Uh-huh. Yeah, he just stopped by. He'll be a little later than you're expecting, I kept him for a bit." he said casually. "... Why? Whaddaya mean 'why', you can't just send a rookie into the fire like that. He needs some proper advice." Another pause. "Uh-huh. Yeah, I know. You're going to ask for more people. Well, I guess I'm your man. That all? Yeah? Well... all right, I'm heading in. Shift ends early today. Carpe diem, bro." WITHOUT YOU, I'M STRUGGLING, MY LOVE
