appearance
OVERALL- It could be said that Kurumi is average on all counts when it comes to her physical attributes. Despite having been born in the states her lack of mixed blood has helped to maintain her ethnic background so that she neither blends in nor stands out any more than other Asiatic immigrants. At 162.56 cm (5'4 approximately) her height is what you'd expect both for her age, gender and bloodline. Weighing at 58kgs Kurumi is, relatively, balanced though her slimness gives her a somewhat waif-like appearance that would look sickly if she didn't wear it so well. True to her heritage she's dark-haired, albeit not black in the iconic way Asians tend to be. Her father is a brunette and she has inherited his coloring, including the blue eyes.
UNIFORM STYLE- basic yasogami uniform
CASUAL STYLE: Ironically enough if left to her own devices Kurumi will wear nothing but a track suit regardless of whether or not she planned to exercise in it. The season hardly matters either. She has a preference towards baggy, breathable clothing that make her so a fair portion of her casual clothing is a size bigger than she is. Plus if anime has taught her anything wearing a short skirt outside of school is grounds to be stalked and harassed. Pants are were it's at, cultural taboos be damned. Otherwise, hoodies and jeans are a common sight in her wardrobe. Working at the shrine however is another matter entirely. She absolutely loves the traditional garb for priestesses and shrine maidens and takes every opportunity to indulge in them when doing chores.
personality
NATURE: Passionate
OVERALL: The word most frequently used to describe Kurumi is 'overzealous. She, personally, wouldn't use this world, preferring something more along the lines of 'jubilant' or 'vivacious' instead. And she isn't wrong, but neither are others. To put it plainly, Kurumi is a person whose cheerful demeanor is tightly married to an overabundance of energy and little to no self-control. It might be excusable now, while she's still considered a kid and entitled to these rambunctious fits, but it can't last nor does she show any sign that her personality will mellow out any time soon.
She's an odd breed. Growing up in the land of the free and home of the don't-give-a-fuck, Kurumi has a certain way about her that can seem disrespectful if not entirely uncouth. She is bold, direct and doesn't waste valuable oxygen to spare people's feeling no matter what kind of relationship she has with them. It's her lack of tact that makes her seem so unmanageable but it's not the only aspect of her demeanor that trips people up.
California is the nesting grounds for all that is beautifully fake and it is something she's had to both cope with and apply to herself. That said, she's gotten very used to adjusting her personality in public, displaying what she wants to specific audiences to put herself in the best possible light in their eyes. In a word, she's a chameleon, blending into the scenery to escape predators – or in this case, prejudices. What she won't change, however, are her convictions and beliefs. While willing to do all manner of tinkering to be liked, there are lines that she refuses to cross, morals she will not break under any circumstances. What those are may not be readily apparent but when push comes to shove she isn't afraid to dig her heels in and hold her ground.
TRAITS:
+ adventurous • the world is a big place and there's always something new to discover, so why not skip down the unbeaten path? At least, that's how she likes to consider it. New ventures aren't something to fear as much as they should be embraced with a healthy dose of caution.
+ hardworking • seeing as it had only been her and her dad at home until recently, Kurumi is not only accustomed to doing things by herself, but also doing it well. She hates leaving things unfinished and even when the task is difficult she puts her best foot forward.
+ optimistic • at any point you could look out at the world and see all the negative things that go on in it but it takes real effort to see the good that lies underneath. It's not always easy nor does she always want to, but if there's a bright side she'll try to bring it out.
+ aggressive • in a good way? She's an ambitious young woman, unafraid to pursue her goals. She might need help along the way but she admits, the prize is sweeter when the chase is fraught with obstacles.
+ eccentric • she's an obsessive otaku. That alone should throw up some red flags but if that's not weird then the fact that she actively pairs people up in her head and goes gaga over every interaction between her 'OTPs' shouldn't come to any surprise.
+ motherly • her father's had it rough ever since his first wife divorced him. To help pick up the slack she became the woman of the house, cooking, cleaning and other household duties. She may or may not have told her dad she was going to marry him when she was older, but we don't talk about that.
- manipulative • her father is usually the target but she's been known to branch out every now and again. She's rarely showing all that she is to any single person ever, mostly because she's afraid of being disliked.
- contrary • sometimes her thoughts and feelings don't match up to what she says and does. it's not an uncommon thing among teenagers but it makes it difficult to gauge how she really feels about a situation until it's too late to turn back.
- violent • it's a case of 'the chihuahua thinking it's a pitbull' kind of scenario with Kurumi. She's a fighter, always has been, and can be a bit heavy-handed when she isn't paying attention. She's also secretly into Judo so...watch out.
- obsessive • ugh. Sometimes she just gets so invested in things she forgets the world around her even exists.
- erratic • and just when you'd thought you had her all figured out, she goes and changes the rules for everything. Kurumi's decision-making skills are constantly coming into question, mainly because she's largely inconsistent with how she reacts to her environment and those in it. One minute she can be a reasonable young lady, the next she's balls-to-the-wall out of her mind with some crazy stunt that any sane person would avoid.
- clueless • she's smart, don't get me wrong, but subtlety is not her forte. Like her father she seems to understand a lot about her environment and the people in it but the intricacies of interaction with them seem to shoot her into a tailspin.

BIO: A mother who didn't want a child. A father a long way away from home. That was the sort of beginning Kurumi had, one that was constantly under fire and scrutiny that circumvented anything that could have equated to a healthy household. Maybe that was fate. If that were true it would be easier to swallow, this knowledge that the woman who gave birth to her ultimately wanted nothing to do with her. No matter how many times she asked to see her, or how hazy the image of her face became, seeing that woman again became a distant, far-off cry that always went unanswered.
Kurumi was three, maybe four years old, when her parents became legally separated. Their marriage had been shaky at best and, if we're being honest, neither side believed in the bond they had welded together. Her father's noble intentions of providing mother and child with a proper home wasn't an acceptable substitute for the love that they no longer had for one another. It would deteriorate – he knew this – but he had wanted to try all the same, if only to soothe his guilt over having impregnated a woman and being unable to follow through with an abortion.
For a long time it was just Kurumi and her father. Her mother had made a clean break, disassociating herself with them the minute the ink dried and taking any would-be extended family with her. Her father's family all resided in Japan and weren't the easiest to contact due to the distance.
It was a tough life. Her father worked two jobs to maintain their living arrangements, to put her through school and ensure she had the necessities but that in turn left him with little time for family. Most evenings she returned to a dark house or, occasionally, was allowed to stay at the apartment two floors beneath theirs where a friend from school lived if she didn't want to be alone. Her dad didn't like it too much when she stayed with them, perhaps envious of their cozy lifestyle and feeling something akin to jealousy when she regaled him on the hours spent there. Or it could be because they called DSS on him. Yeah, that was probably it.
But even though their home was not ideal, they were happy. During the summer vacation her dad would send her off to his parents in Inaba a few weeks ahead of him and she would enjoy two months there. Her grandparents had, naturally, been appalled that she didn't know Japanese. They themselves didn't know all that much English so the burden of a language barrier was a struggle at first but gradually overcome.
It was their culture that Kurumi fell in love with first, not her relatives. (Though she loved them too) The Japanese were always depicted as a very close knit community, familial if she had to choose a word for it, something that she felt she lacked. She would always get anxious and distressed when it became time to depart for the states and in the days following was always thrown off balance by the unfriendliness she was met with. It was socially acceptable in the US to be standoffish, something so different from the people she'd met in Inaba who smiled and wished her good morning despite not even knowing her.
At that point she became obsessed. She wanted to embrace that culture and learn everything there was to know about it. Manga and anime were the easiest material to procure and within the span of two years had quite the collection spanning several genre's. They allowed her to fantasize and escape into the world she believed she wanted, even if many of the depictions weren't completely accurate.
When she turned ten she met Tabitha. Her father had been skittish for a few months and she'd merely excused it for stress (she wasn't entirely wrong but the reason was completely out of left field) and it was a shock to her. Dad's girlfriend. The idea hadn't sat well with her in the beginning but if there was one thing she never wanted to do it was cause trouble for her father. So, grudgingly, she accepted the woman and pretended this new development didn't bother her. She did that a lot actually. Mold herself to be what others wanted. She rarely was her true self around the people in her life for the simple fact that she was afraid of what they would think of her if she was anything outside the little cookie cutter illusion she projected.
As it turned out her father had been dating this woman for a year before introducing them and another two followed after that before they got married. Kurumi was thirteen and in middle school, enjoying her youth as much as possible when they got a call from their grandmother stating that her grandfather was in the hospital. The old man who had bounced her on his knee wasn't doing well and her grandmother feared what they all knew was coming. His kidney's were failing and the dialysis could only treat so much of the problem.
It was a decision she had not been privy to until the last moment. Her father had a sibling, a sister who was seven years older than himself, who would have inherited the shrine their parents owned if not for the fact that she didn't want it. While people still visited the shrine to pray on New Year's the attendance had dwindled dramatically with the arrival of the twenty-first century. She wanted to sell it. Her grandparents didn't. Kurumi's father didn't either and neither did his daughter. But moving to Japan? It was something out of a novel if she were to be frank but it was the reality of her life when they sat her down one evening and asked her opinion.
She didn't want to. As much as she loved Japan, its people and its culture, she wasn't looking forward to a change of that magnitude. She stood to lose all her friends, all the familiar sights and the relative safety of the place where she grew up in exchange for a financial black-hole of a shrine. But she didn't protest. Like always she told them it would be 'fun' and that 'they would go live with grandma and grandpa' and 'be a real family'. She hated that she couldn't express how much she didn't want to go.
Her father remained in the states to tie up loose ends and remarry. Tabitha had wanted to keep her maiden name rather than take her fathers, something that couldn't be done in a ceremony held in Japan. Unfortunately, in that time her grandfather passed away, hastening their departure from California. Tabitha stayed just long enough to allow Kurumi to finish out the end of her last year in middle school before leaving.
